The EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson in her opening remarks emphasized that for the European Commission elements of the Green Deal and the competitiveness of the economy will be of key importance in the preparation of the recovery plan of the EU economy after a pandemic.

In the course of the discussion, Member States' ministers addressed questions prepared by the Croatian Presidency regarding system readiness and a recovery plan in the field of energy and climate.

The Minister of Climate, Michał Kurtyka, representing Poland at the meeting, said that Poland has conducted an analysis of the current crisis from the perspective of the energy sector and has identified four key areas for intervention:

  • investment: ensuring the completion of key energy projects under construction,
  • industry: strengthening key sectors needed to achieve climate neutrality while ensuring the day-to-day functioning of the economy,
  • innovation: closer cooperation to develop the technologies needed,
  • people: solidarity and protection for the poorest and most vulnerable.

"In this particular situation, it will be necessary to stimulate new and ongoing investments in the energy sector through an ambitious recovery plan and a solid multiannual financial framework," added the minister.

In the opinion of the Polish climate chief, the EU's energy and climate goals should remain ambitious, but above all realistic.

In addition, as emphasized by the Minister of Climate, particular attention should be paid to ensuring uninterrupted energy supply and completing key projects to minimize the impact of the pandemic on the next decade goals adopted in the Paris Agreement.

"We should strengthen the autonomy of the supply chain in the EU. We should also support investments enabling renewable energy sources ito play a bigger role in the energy mix” Minister Kurtyka underlined.

Poland is in a group of countries that during the meeting advocated in favour of continued financing of natural gas projects as part of the energy transformation and post-pandemic recovery plan.
