The discussion focused on the following items:

  • specific measures foreseen or already in place to support the sport sector
  • how to ensure the continuity of athletes’ training and enhance the physical activity of citizens while at the same time ensuring their safety and limiting the spreading of the virus
  • the main steps to be prepared and taken in order to successfully restart activity of the sport sector.

During the debate, Member States expressed very similar opinions on the challenges posed by the current crisis, for both competitive and amateur sport and the entire sports industry. Increase in unemployment in the sector and loss of income by athletes, trainers, clubs and sport organizations due to cancellation of sporting events and suspension of the training process are widespread throughout the EU.

Minister Dmowska-Andrzejuk emphasized that at the next stages of rebuilding the vitality of sport has to take place in close cooperation with partners in Europe and the world. It has to be based on an exchange of information and far-reaching coordination of activities, as well as cooperation with the sports circles.
