Ambassador of Poland met the regional authorities in northern Greece

On October 19-21, 2020, Ambassador Artur Lompart paid a visit to the regions of Central Macedonia as well as East Macedonia and Thrace, where he had meetings with the Minister of Macedonia and Thrace Theodoros Karaoglou, the Governor of the Region of East Macedonia and Thrace Christos Metios, the Mayor of Thessaloniki Konstantinos Zervas, the Mayor of Alexandroupolis Ioannis Zampoukis and the representatives of Kavala – Vice Mayor Apostolos Moumtsakis. The talks mainly concerned the possibility of establishing cooperation with Polish cities and regions. The region of East Macedonia and Thrace is interested in developing regional cooperation with the Podlasie region, while at the city level: Thessaloniki is ready to cooperate with Krakow, Alexandroupolis wants to establish contact with one of the port cities in Poland, and Kavala wishes to develop contacts with the Poviat Kaliski. The talks, also attended by the head of the political and economic department of the embassy, T. Wiśniewski, examined the possibility of expanding economic cooperation, where the most promising areas are trade of agricultural and food products, as well as tourism. The subject of potential benefits related to the participation of Greece in the Via Carpatia multimodal corridor project was also discussed.

The Polish delegation met also with the management of the ports of Alexandroupolis and Kavala, respectively Konstantinos Chatzimichail and Konstantinos Chatzikonstantinou. The purpose of the discussion were the possibilities of developing infrastructure connections between Poland and Greek ports through the development opportunities offered by participation in Via Carpatia project. The talks also focused on the prospects for Greece's participation in key projects implemented under the Three Seas Initiative.
