27.01.2020

January 27 is celebrated in Greece as the Remembrance Day of the Greek Holocaust Victims. On this occasion, commemorating ceremonies took place in Athens and Thessaloniki.

The ceremony in Athens began with a prayer at the Greek Jews Holocaust Monument in the city center, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony by representatives of Jewish communities and organizations in Greece, veterans' organizations, embassies, government, parliament and political parties. The Greek Government was represented by Deputy Prime Minister Panagiotis Pikramenos. On behalf of the Polish Embassy in Athens, the wreath was laid by chargé d’affaires Tomasz Wiśniewski.

At the same time, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was in Poland, where he participated in the central celebrations commemorating the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. He was accompanied by his wife Mareva Grabovski-Mitsotakis, President of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece, David Saltiel, and other officials. It was the first visit of the Greek prime minister to the former extermination camp. K. Mitsotakis in his television speech emphasized the tragedy of Greek Jews in Auschwitz and said, quoting noted historian Ian Kershaw, that "the road to Auschwitz was built by hate, but paved with indifference".
