For its time, it was a progressive and bold legal act which initiated a number of reforms. It also constituted a crowning achievement of the centuries-old links between Poland and Lithuania.

Today it is the capital of the commune of Nikolaos Skoufas. One of the most dramatic battles of the Greek Revolution took place there on July 4, 1822 (July 16 according to the Gregorian calendar).
