Prospects for Polish-Greek Cooperation to Enhance Europe's Security

04.05.2026

Examining the potential for cooperation between Poland and Greece in implementing defence projects under the SAFE instrument was the main topic of a visit to Athens on April 29-30 by Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka, Undersecretary of State and Government Plenipotentiary for the SAFE instrument for enhancing Europe's security, along with a delegation from the Ministry of National Defence, the Ministry of Development and Technology and Polish defence companies.

The delegation visited the headquarters and production line of the Theon Group, which specializes in the development and production of advanced electro-optical night vision systems and thermal imaging devices for defence and security applications, as well as the Greek office of ICEYE, a leader in satellite radar technologies. On the second day of the visit, a meeting took place with Greek Deputy Minister of National Defence Athanasios Davakis, Secretary General for National Security in the Office of the Greek Prime Minister Thanos Dokos, representatives of the Greek Ministry of National Defence, and Greek defence companies. During the talks, the similar security situation between Poland and Greece was highlighted – a challenging, large neighbour, high defence spending in both countries and a commitment to the development of European defence, as reflected in the joint letter from the Polish and Greek Prime Ministers in May 2024 regarding the creation of a European missile defence shield. Minister Davakis presented the Greek project for a new integrated air defence system – the Achilles Shield – and indicated sectors in which Greece could offer cooperation, including naval systems, shipyards, unmanned aerial vehicles, and ammunition production. Minister Sobkowiak-Czarnecka expressed gratitude for Greece's ratification of the agreement on the mutual protection of classified information, encouraged intensified activities under the SAFE instrument, and presented the SAN anti-drone system project. Polish companies participating in the meetings presented their offers aimed at the Greek market. The next meeting on joint projects is planned for Poland.
