At the initiative of the Faculty of History and Archaeology of the University of Ioannina and in cooperation with the Polish Embassy in Athens, a historical symposium entitled "Byzantium in Poland - Poland in Byzantium. Past and Present" was held at the University of Ioannina on October 23rd.
The symposium was opened by the Rector of the University, Professor Dr. Anna Batistatou, and Ambassador Wojciech Ponikiewski. In subsequent sessions, historians and archaeologists from universities in Warsaw, Krakow, Poznań, Łódź, Rzeszów, Gdańsk and Ioannina presented their papers.
The visit to Ioannina by the head of the Polish diplomatic mission, W. Ponikiewski, also provided an opportunity to meet with the Mayor of Ioannina, Mr. Thomas Begas. The discussion focused on the possibilities of developing cooperation between Ioannina and Kielce in the areas of cultural, sports, and tourism exchange. The topic of commemorating the Polish veteran of the January Uprising, Zygmunt Mineyka, who lived and worked in Ioannina for many years, contributing to the city's urban development and, in 1912, to the Greek capture of the fortress in Bizani and the liberation of Ioannina from Turkish rule, was also discussed.
The prospects for academic cooperation with the Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce were discussed by Ambassador Ponikiewski with the Rector of the University of Ioannina, Professor Dr. Anna Batistatou.
