Tribute to Jerzy Iwanow-Szajnowicz
15.10.2026
The "Ivanofia" 2026 festival-a series of events commemorating the greatest saboteur of World War II-took place at Ivanov Park in Thessaloniki.
On October 10, the theater group Jitterbugs SKG presented a performance titled "Jerzy Iwanow-Szajnowicz: Athlete, Saboteur, Hero." The production highlighted the fascinating story of Jerzy Iwanow-Szajnowicz, who was born in Warsaw and grew up in Thessaloniki. As "Agent No. 1" and the greatest saboteur of World War II, Iwanow-Szajnowicz operated in Athens during the German occupation; he was executed by the Nazis at Kaisariani on January 4, 1943, at the age of just 32.
The event drew a large crowd of local residents and city officials, as well as students and teachers from the Jerzy Iwanow-Szajnowicz Polish School in Thessaloniki.
The event was supported by the City of Thessaloniki, the 2nd Municipal District of Thessaloniki, and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Athens.
