42nd Anniversary of the Election of Pope John Paul II

In connection with the accusations of Ms. Margrét Adamsdóttir about Mr. Gerard Pokruszyński, the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the Republic of Iceland, which have appeared in the media, we would like to inform that the allegations do not reflect reality.

On 15 August 2020 we solemnly celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw – a culminating point of the Polish-Soviet War (1919-1920) and one of the most decisive events in the history of Poland, Europe, and the world.

The President of Iceland Guðni Th. Jóhannesson sent a letter to the President of Poland Andrzej Duda in response to the Polish president’s letter to European leaders from April 28, 2020.

The “Diplomacy in Times of War” series is a cyclical publication of short historical notes presenting little-known details about the activities of Polish diplomats during World War II. The short texts are accompanied by rare photos and documents from Polish and foreign archives.

On April 10, 2010, a special TU-154M plane with the President of Poland Lech Kaczyński and the First Lady Maria Kaczyńska on board took off from Warsaw to Smolensk. That day, at the Katyn War Cemetery the official delegation was to participate in an event commemorating the 70th anniversary of the genocide committed on site. The aircraft carried 96 people, including members of supreme state authorities, representatives of civil society and Churches, high-ranking military commanders and the plane’s crew. All passengers died in the air disaster which took place during the landing at the airport near Smolensk.
