Joint statement by the Minister of Justice - Prosecutor General and the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration, Coordinator of Secret Services
11.05.2025
On 12 May 2024, a fire broke out at the Marywilska 44 Shopping Centre in Warsaw. A total of 1,400 shops and service outlets were completely burned.
For last year, the Mazovian Branch of the National Prosecutor's Office for Organised Crime and Corruption, with cooperation of the Warsaw Police Headquarters and the Internal Security Agency, has been conducting an intensive investigation into the circumstances of this incident. The Polish authorities are cooperating with their Lithuanian counterparts, where some of the perpetrators also carried out acts of diversion.
The investigation involved extraordinary measures. A total of 55 prosecutors and 100 police officers, supported by experts and technicians, took part in the inspection of the burnt area. It lasted 121 days. Over 70 witnesses and 530 victims were interviewed.
Currently, based on the evidence gathered, we know that the fire was the result of arson instructed by the Russian secret services. We have figured out the instruction and course of the arson and how it was documented by the perpetrators. Their actions were organised and directed by a specific person residing in the Russian Federation. Some of the perpetrators are already in custody, while the others have been identified and are being sought to be arrested. The National Prosecutor's Office, the Police and the Internal Security Agency are continuing their investigative and operational activities aimed at apprehending them.
The Polish authorities are determined to bring to justice the perpetrators of these shameful acts of diversion and those who directed them. At the same time, we would like to thank all public officials involved in the investigation, both at the procedural and operational-reconnaissance levels. You are doing an excellent job with full commitment to the security of our Homeland and our citizens, by detecting, combating and counteracting acts of diversion, organised and steered from the Russian Federation.
