Undersecretary of State

Maria Ejchart (born April 11, 1976) is a lawyer specializing in human rights, with a particular focus on the rights of people deprived of liberty. She is an expert in this field, recognized both in Poland and abroad.

Since 2003, she has been coordinating the "Innocence" program at the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, which monitors cases of miscarriages of justice and supports people who have been wrongly convicted.

She was a member of the Board of Trustees at the Commissioner for Human Rights and co-chair of the Expert Committee of the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture. She is a Polish member of the European Innocence Network, an organization of European programs dealing with the problem of wrongful convictions.

She has prepared reports on the state of human rights in Poland for domestic and international institutions, including the United Nations Committee against Torture, the UN Human Rights Committee, and the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT). As an expert, she participated in the works of parliamentary teams on Constitutional Order and Reform of the Judiciary and the Sejm Committee on Justice.

She is the author or co-author of numerous publications, including the scientific monograph "Life imprisonment. The murderer, their crime and punishment" (co-authored with Maria Niełaczna and Andrzej Rzepliński).

In 2015, she became the president of the Professor Zbigniew Hołda Association. She is also the co-founder of the civic initiative Wolne Sądy (Free Courts) and Komitet Obrony Sprawiedliwości (Committee for the Defense of Justice).
