Poland and the USA Collaborate to Support Justice for Ukraine – Meeting of Deputy Minister of Justice Zuzanna Rudzińska-Bluszcz with Ambassador Beth Van Schaack

During the meeting on October 16, 2024, the participants discussed U.S. initiatives to support justice for Ukraine and Poland's legal assistance efforts. They also reviewed Polish legislation on prosecuting international crimes and supporting victims. A significant topic was Poland's role in international criminal prosecution, particularly in cases related to Ukraine and Belarus.

The conversation also touched on the prospects of a motion submitted by the Lithuanian government to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Alexander Lukashenko and the Belarusian regime for crimes committed against the Belarusian population.

Ambassador Beth Van Schaack expressed full support for international efforts to prosecute and hold accountable those responsible for crimes committed by Russia. One of the key initiatives discussed was the joint effort by the U.S. and Poland to establish a tribunal tasked with bringing Russian state leaders to international justice for the crime of aggression against Ukraine, as well as for genocide and war crimes defined in the ICC Statute.

Deputy Prosecutor General Jacek Bilewicz highlighted the significant involvement of Polish prosecutors in the Joint Investigation Team (JIT). Ambassador Van Schaack commended JIT's role in preparing investigations against perpetrators of war crimes in Ukraine and expressed strong support for Poland’s efforts.

The Ministry of Justice supports the creation of an international tribunal to investigate Russia's aggression against Ukraine. This tribunal would operate within the structures of the Council of Europe. Since the onset of Russia’s aggression, Polish prosecutors have worked closely with their Ukrainian counterparts to investigate and document Russian crimes.

Beth Van Schaack serves as the U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice. The Office of Global Criminal Justice (GCJ) is a U.S. government initiative focused on promoting international justice, particularly in response to crimes such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. Operating under the U.S. Department of State, GCJ coordinates U.S. policies on holding perpetrators accountable and supporting victims of these crimes.

GCJ supports international tribunals and collaborates with other nations and international organizations to strengthen legal systems that facilitate the prosecution of serious crimes. The office frequently operates in regions affected by armed conflicts or humanitarian crises to promote accountability and combat impunity.
