On 21-22 May, an informal meeting of NATO foreign ministers took place in Helsingborg - the first one organised by Sweden since the country joined the North Atlantic Alliance. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, Radosław Sikorski.
The main topics of the discussions were transatlantic relations and increased defence spending. Deputy Prime Minister Sikorski thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for confirming that the rotational presence of U.S. troops in Poland will be maintained at its current level. He also stressed the need for close cooperation between Poland and the United States, as well as between Europe and the United States, and for greater European engagement within NATO.
The ministers also discussed strengthening Europe’s defence capabilities in light of threats from Russia. The head of Polish diplomacy also presented Poland’s expectations ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara in July. Sikorski emphasised that allies should demonstrate unity and clearly reaffirm their readiness to uphold Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which concerns collective defence.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Sweden, Maria Malmer Stenergard, had previously underlined that the choice of Helsingborg as the venue was not coincidental, as the city, located on the Öresund Strait, holds strategic importance for the security of the Baltic Sea region and cooperation within the Alliance.
