On 29 June, the first-ever Polish-Swedish intergovernmental consultations were held in Gdynia, chaired by the Prime Ministers of Poland and Sweden, Donald Tusk and Ulf Kristersson. The meeting was attended by ministers of foreign affairs, defence, infrastructure, culture, and European affairs, who held talks with their Swedish counterparts. Also present were the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Sweden, Karolina Ostrzyniewska, and the Ambassador of Sweden to Poland, Martina Quick.
During the consultations, representatives of Poland and Sweden adopted a Joint Declaration and a Joint Statement on the Baltic Pact, in which both countries agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation in the areas of security and defence in the Baltic Sea region. The Ministers of Infrastructure of both countries, Dariusz Klimczak and Andreas Carlson, also signed an “Agreement on cooperation in the development of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and strengthening connections in the Baltic Sea region.”
On the same day, aboard the ORP Gen. Tadeusz Kościuszko, in the presence of the heads of government of Poland and Sweden, an agreement was signed for the purchase of three A26 submarines for the Polish Navy under the Orka programme.
“Much effort and work has been invested to ensure not only the signing of today’s extensive set of documents, including the important Orka programme agreement and the submarine purchase, but also progress in many other areas,” said Prime Minister Donald Tusk in a statement to the media. He added: “We have ambitious plans, and this major Orka project should be seen as a stage, not the final goal, of our cooperation.”
The Prime Minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson, highlighted the exceptionally strong relations between the two countries: “Relations between Poland and Sweden are the best in history. They are deeper and stronger than ever before. We are allies in NATO, strategic partners in the European Union, and neighbours on the Baltic Sea.”
In addition to the agreements on Swedish submarines for the Polish armed forces, further arrangements were concluded within the framework of the programme.
