On the margins of the event, the Marshal held meetings with the Speaker of the Riksdag, the Speakers of the Parliaments of the Nordic countries, as well as senior officials from the Swedish Ministry of Defence.
The Nordic Council Session is the largest political summit in the region and serves as a consultative forum for the parliaments and governments of the Nordic countries and their autonomous territories. This year’s session brought together 87 parliamentarians from Denmark (including representatives of the Faroe Islands and Greenland), Sweden, Norway, Iceland, and Finland (with representatives from the Åland Islands). During the plenary session, the Marshal was accompanied by the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Sweden, Karolina Ostrzyniewska.
In his address to the Nordic Council, Marshal Szymon Hołownia emphasized the importance of deepening parliamentary cooperation between the Nordic countries and Poland, pointing out that this is one of the key priorities of his term. Referring to the challenges facing the Baltic Sea region, he highlighted the need for joint action in support of peace, security, and stability in the face of growing hybrid threats in the region.
Marshal Hołownia’s participation in the session also provided an opportunity for consultations with the Speakers of the Nordic parliaments. He additionally attended the Nordic Council Awards Gala, honoring social activists, writers, musicians, filmmakers, and authors of children’s literature.
The Marshal also held bilateral talks with the Speaker of the Riksdag, Andreas Norlén. The head of the Swedish Parliament hosted a working lunch during which the Marshal met with Sweden’s Minister of Defence Pål Jonson and State Secretary at the Ministry of Defence Peter Sandwall. The discussions focused on the security situation and bilateral cooperation in the field of defense.
Summing up his visit, Marshal Hołownia underscored the strategic partnership between Poland and Sweden, stating: “The Baltic Sea is our shared challenge, treasure, and responsibility. The time has come for us to instinctively see Swedes as our closest neighbors – because to the north, we have not only the sea but also friends.”
