03.04.2025

On 28 March, as part of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, a study visit in the EU Heads of Mission format took place in Stockholm. The purpose of the meeting was to familiarise participants with the innovative BECCS technology (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage), which is designed to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere. The event was opened by Karolina Ostrzyniewska, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Republic of Poland in Stockholm, and Olle Burell, Chair of the Stockholm City Council.

During the presentation, Anders Egelrud, CEO of Stockholm Exergi, explained how the modern BECCS technology makes it possible to generate heat and electricity for the Swedish capital while at the same time achieving negative carbon emissions. The planned installation in Stockholm is expected to capture 800,000 tons of CO₂ annually – the equivalent of the city’s entire road traffic emissions for a year. With an investment of SEK 13 billion, the project is a significant step toward making Stockholm a global leader in sustainable energy transformation.
