"Footprints in the Sand: Poles Helped Build the United Arab Emirates"
27.07.2026
Did you know that there’s also a Polish chapter in the history of the United Arab Emirates? Today, the Emirates are associated with modern cities and impressive architecture. Few people remember that as early as the days of the Polish People’s Republic, Polish engineers, surveyors, doctors, and coaches were working there, contributing to the development of the young nation. Jolanta Mikołajczyk, a librarian who has lived in the Emirates for over 20 years, tells this extraordinary story. In the interview, you’ll also hear about the days when letters to Poland were delivered thanks to LOT flight attendants, about the Polish-language newspaper “Piasek,” and about how Polish cement and… wicker found their way into the construction of Abu Dhabi. We invite you to listen to the conversation. It’s a story that shows that Poles were leaving their mark on the world long before the era of budget flights and social media.
