Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland

Piotr Skwieciński was born in Warsaw in 1963. He is a graduate of the Faculty of History at the University of Warsaw. In the 1980s, he was active in the then Solidarity underground movement (Oficyna Wydawnicza "Pokolenie" and the Independent Student Association).

In 1990–1994 he worked as a journalist for "Życie Warszawy" (“The Life of Warsaw”) magazine, in 1994–1996 - deputy head of the news program Wiadomości TVP1. From 1996 to 1998 he worked in the newspaper "Życie", and in 1998-2003 he was the head of the national editorial office of the Polish Press Agency. Between 2003 and 2006 he was the head of a free viewpoint program with a political purpose at TV Puls. Skwieciński  also collaborated with "Gazeta Polska", "Rzeczpospolita" and "Dziennik" and "Nowe Państwo". In the years 2006-2009 he was the President of the Polish Press Agency, and in 2009-2010 - advisor to Mr Slawomir Skrzypek, the President of the National Bank of Poland. Afterwards, Skwiciński started to work for "Rzeczpospolita" Newspaper, starting from March till the end of December 2011 he became the Moscow correspondent of this Newspaper (on January 1, 2012, "Rzeczpospolita" liquidated its office in Moscow). From January 2012 till February 2013, he was a columnist for "Rzeczpospolita" and the weekly magazine "Uważam Rze". From February 2013 till February 2019, he was the columnist for the weekly magazine "W Sieci".

On March 1, 2019, he became the director of the Polish Institute in Moscow . In 2020, the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of Poland appointed him to the Council of the Center for Polish-Russian Dialogue and Understanding (currently, Juliusz Mieroszewski Centre for Dialogue). In April 2022, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine Skwieciński was expelled from Russia together with a group of 45 Polish diplomats. On August 22, 2022, he took up the position of Deputy Director of the Department of Public and Cultural Diplomacy in the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responsible for dialogue with the Jewish diaspora.

 

In 2010, Piotr Skwieciński was awarded with the Commander's Cross of Polonia Restituta "for outstanding merits in activities for democratic changes in Poland, for achievements in professional and social work undertaken for the benefit of the country", and in 2022 he received the Centennial Medal of of Poland's Regained Independence.
