Information for Patients

A lung transplant is an operation performed on patients with severe and irreversible lung damage, for whom alternative treatment options have been exhausted. This means that no other cardiac or thoracic surgery is available, and drug treatment offers no hope of stopping further progression of the disease. Evaluation for surgery is based on objective tests that assess lung function. A lung transplant is recommended for patients who, based on prognostic criteria, have less than a 50% chance of surviving the next two years. If a patient's lung disease is immediately life-threatening or is expected to be fatal within a few days or weeks, an urgent lung transplant is recommended.

Potential lung recipients are always enrolled in the Transplantation Centre by the doctor who has been managing the patient thus far.
