Meeting of government coordinators for the Three Seas Initiative

11.02.2021

Today’s video conference, organised by Bulgaria, was attended by Deputy Foreign Minister Paweł Jabłoński and government coordinators for the Three Seas Initiative. Representatives of the European Commission, United States, and Germany joined the discussion along with representatives of the format’s member states. Bulgaria convened the meeting to present its vision of developing cooperation within the Three Seas Initiative. The conference also aimed to support preparations for the sixth Three Seas Summit, which will take place in Sofia at the turn of June and July.

Deputy Minister Paweł Jabłoński underlined the need to strengthen the practical, intergovernmental dimension of the cooperation. He also called on all member states to increase their contribution to the Three Seas Investment Fund (Poland contributed EUR 750 mln), and to remain open to collaboration with interested third countries.

The objectives of the Three Seas Initiative fully correspond with the EU’s priorities, especially in the field of digital transformation, improved connectivity, achieving climate targets, and rebuilding our economies after the crisis caused by the COVID pandemic, highlighted the deputy head of Polish diplomacy.

Deputy Minister Jabłoński also stressed the need to seek new areas of cooperation.

An essential goal for the Three Seas Initiative is diversification of natural gas supplies. For our economy it is, and will remain a priority in the coming years. However, it is time we started thinking about new solutions for the future. We should consider joint actions to use hydrogen as a source of energy, said the MFA deputy head.

The deputy chief of Polish diplomacy supported the “Three Seas Smart Connectivity” project that was put forward during last year’s Three Seas Initiative Summit in Tallinn. He stressed that connecting energy and transport infrastructure in our countries by means of digital platforms is of key importance for the development of our region. The unification of standards in these areas in the Initiative member states would help to foster the development of state of the art solutions and services, and would enhance the interest of serious commercial investors.

Deputy Minister Paweł Jabłoński invited the attendees of the video conference to take part in the second edition of the Three Seas Initiative Forum of Regions to be organised by the Marshal Office of the Lubelskie Voivodeship on 27-28 April 2021.

Launched in 2016 by Poland’s and Croatia’s presidents, the Three Seas Initiative brings together twelve Central European countries. Its strategic goal is to maintain and strengthen the unity of the EU and the Euro-Atlantic area.

The leaders of Central European countries want to achieve this goal by identifying new sources of modernising their economies, particularly through improving infrastructure integration of the region, strengthening the security and competitiveness of its energy supply, and accelerating the development of the digital economy, thus boosting the economic and social cohesion throughout the EU.
