Deputy Minister Wiśniewski expressed his appreciation for the constructive role of the MIKTA group in strengthening global governance and stressed the shared values, interests and opinions with respect to global threats which unite MIKTA countries and Poland. He expressed hope for enhancing cooperation between Poland and those countries at international fora as well as for getting support for Poland’s aspirations to active role in discussions within G20. Juan Sandoval Mendiolea, Ambassador of Mexico, a country which now chairs the group, outlined its activities as well as the priorities and goals of its Mexican presidency.

The MIKTA group was established at the 68th session of the United States General Assembly, in September 2013, following a decision of the foreign ministers of Australia, Indonesia, South Korea, Mexico, and Türkiye. MIKTA is not an international organisation but an informal grouping of G20 member states with similar economies and broader global ambitions, united by their views on contemporary political, economic and social processes.

MIKTA hold consultations on projects to deepen cooperation among its members and political coordination on key global issues, based on “identified common interests” that can be pursued by member countries at international forums. MIKTA cooperation focuses on seven areas: countering terrorism and global security; trade and the economy; energy resource management; good governance and democracy; gender equality; sustainable development; and peacekeeping.
