Winners of Foreign Minister’s history competition for best publications promoting the history of Poland and Polish diplomacy announced

On 22 December 2020, at the request of the Historical Diplomacy Council, Minister of Foreign Affairs Zbigniew Rau awarded prizes and honourable mentions in the fourth edition of the history competition.

The prizes went to the following research and popular science works published in 2019:

1.      Best publication on the history of Polish diplomacy in the Polish language:

Main prize – Janusz Faryś, Między Moskwą a Berlinem. Wizja polskiej polityki zagranicznej 1918-1939, Institute of National Remembrance, Szczecin-Warsaw 2019.

First honourable mention – Henryk Walczak, Wizyty szefów państw w ramach wzajemnych stosunków Polski i Rumunii w dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym, Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu Szczecińskiego, Szczecin 2019.

Second honourable mention – Wojciech Kucharski, Komuniści i Watykan. Polityka komunistycznej Polski wobec Stolicy Apostolskiej 1945-1974, Institute of National Remembrance, Warsaw 2019.

2.      Best foreign-language publication promoting Poland’s history:

Main prize – Roger Moorhouse (the United Kingdom), First to Fight. The Polish War 1939, The Bodley Head, London 2019.

First honourable mention – Jack Fairweather (the United Kingdom), The Volunteer. One Man, an Underground Army, and the Secret Mission to Destroy Auschwitz, HarperCollins, New York 2019.

Second honourable mention – Kazuo Fujii (Japan), Socioeconomic History of Poland in the 19th Century – the Emergence of Entrepreneurs and Modern Society in Łódź [English translation], Kwansei Gakuin University Press, Nishinomiya 2019.

Special honourable mention went to the Memorial Society for the publication of a volume of documents titled Killed in Kalinin, buried in Mednoye v. 1-3 [English translation], MEMORIAL, Moscow 2019 and in recognition for its contribution to the commemoration of Polish victims of Stalinist crimes.

The award ceremony will be organised once the epidemiological situation stabilises.

The fifth edition of the competition will be announced in 2021. It will be open to books published in 2020.
