World reads the first diplomatic cable of reborn Poland

11.11.2018

On the occasion of the centenary of Poland’s regaining independence, Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs invited citizens of six countries located on three continents to read the cable which told the world about the creation of the Polish Republic. The cable signed by Józef Piłsudski, was a symbolic document for Poland which had been reborn after 123 years of partitions.

Signed by Józef Piłsudski, composed in French, the cable was radioed to the Polish National Committee in Paris on 16 November 1918, and published in Monitor Polski. Next, the missive was addressed to the US president, the governments of Great Britain, France, Italy, and Germany, and to the governments of all countries which were “at war or neutral.”

The addressees were informed that Józef Piłsudski, Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Army, “wishes to notify the governments and nations of the existence of an independent Polish state, encompassing all the territories of a reunified Poland.” But there was still a long way to go before borders were finally drawn and hostilities ended. It was not until 1919 that most European countries established diplomatic relations with Poland.

The cable is now part of  Polish diplomatic history, and  one of the most important documents of the Polish foreign service.
