Minister Zbigniew Rau attended Foreign Affairs Council

The situation in Belarus, the poisoning of Alexei Navalny, the southern neighborhood of the EU and the cooperation of the European Union with the African Union were the main topics of the meeting of foreign ministers of the EU member states.

Minister Rau called for the adoption of sanctions against those responsible for electoral fraud and brutal repression of participants in peaceful demonstrations in Belarus. Chief of Poland’s diplomacy underlined the need to develop a long-term offer of economic support for the future democratic Belarus. He considered it necessary to strongly oppose possible attempts by third countries to influence the situation in Belarus and pointed to Russia's illegal hybrid actions, also in the area of ​​disinformation.

During the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council, the ministers addressed, inter alia, to poisoning Alexei Navalny. Minister Rau condemned the attack on the leader of the Russian opposition and spoke in favor of strengthening the EU's activity for the protection of human rights by Russia. Minister Rau stressed that the EU's relations with Russia should be reconsidered, also in the area of ​​energy cooperation. The head of Polish diplomacy pointed out that the Nord Stream 2 project is contrary to the EU's security interests and should be suspended.

During his visit to Brussels, Minister Zbigniew Rau also met with Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General. The talks focused on NATO's relations with Russia and Belarus and the NATO summit planned for 2021.
