Videoconference of the members of the European Council

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki took part in the videoconference of the members of the European Council. The discussion focused on issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the situation in Russia and Belarus, and relations with Turkey. The talks also touched upon issues of digital transformation, the single market and industrial policy.

The main focus of the exchange of views on COVID19 was to accelerate the production, delivery and deployment of vaccines as well as transparency and the use of export authorisations. Poland considers it a priority to accelerate the authorization, production and distribution of vaccines and supports the additional efforts of the EC to work with industry to increase production and adaptation to new virus variants.

EU leaders recalled the strategic interest in a stable and secure environment in the Eastern Mediterranean and in the development of a cooperative and mutually beneficial relationship with Turkey. 

During the videoconference, the head of the Polish government referred to the situation in Belarus, stressing that the authorities in Minsk were trying to blame Poland and Polish citizens for destabilizing the situation. At the same time, he called for the Union to take decisive action on the persecution of Poles in Belarus. Polish prime minister also called for the European Commission to present a comprehensive plan of economic support for a democratic Belarus as soon as possible.

Regarding the relations with Russia, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, presented a report on his recent conversation with the President Vladimir Putin. The strategic debate on Russia is expected during the next European Council.

Leaders also discussed transatlantic relations with US President Joe Biden.

Moreover, the heads of state or government underlined the key priorities of the single market, industrial policy and digital transformation. They discussed in detail issues related to the 'digital compass', including targets for 2030, and reviewed the state of play on international digital taxation.

The meeting also included inclusive Euro Summit. EU leaders agreed on a statement where they expressed their support for strengthening the position of the euro on the global stage
