"Accessible public space" programme with increased budget

28.09.2023

Paweł Wdówik, Government Plenipotentiary for Disabled Persons, and Krzysztof Michałkiewicz, President of the Management Board of the State Fund for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled (PFRON), during a press briefing summarised the "Accessible Public Space" programme aimed at people with special needs.

"Accessible public space" programme with increased budget

The "Accessible Public Space" programme consists of four modules: elimination of barriers in local authorities, not only in offices, but also in local government sports or cultural facilities, churches, and places of worship, on playgrounds and in medical entities.

Thanks to the excellent financial condition of the State Fund for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled, we have been able to increase the budget of this programme, originally planned at PLN 300 million for four years, by almost a second – informed State Secretary Paweł Wdówik.

The local government module was the most popular. An increase in its funding will allow funding of all applications approved by the selection committee. Playgrounds created under this module are intended to be accessible, inclusive and open.

Thanks to the medical module, we are eliminating discriminatory attitudes towards women with disabilities, especially in gynaecological surgeries, and ensuring that they are treated with dignity – stressed Deputy Minister Wdówik.

He also recalled the ongoing car programme, providing mobile opportunities for people with physical disabilities. Its budget for this year is PLN 0.5 billion.

We want to make Poland more friendly for everyone, including people with special needs – declared during the briefing Krzysztof Michałkiewicz, President of the Management Board of PFRON.

He stressed that just as important as breaking down architectural barriers is their removal in the area of information and communication.
