Good Start

The “Good Start” programme is an investment in Polish children’s education. It provides PLN 300 of single support for all students starting a school year. Families shall receive the benefit irrespectively of the income. It provides support for 4.6 million students.

The good start benefit is granted once a year per child learning at a school until 20 years of age. Disabled children learning at a school shall receive the benefit until 24 years of age.

In order to receive support one must file an application. It can be done by a mother, a father, the child’s legal guardian or factual guardian (a factual guardian is a natural person actually taking care of the child, who applied to the guardianship court for adoption of the child). The application for the benefit for children who remain in alternative care is filed by a foster parent, a person running a family orphanage or a director of a care and upbringing establishment.

The application for the good start benefit – similarly as the application for the child-support benefit from the “Family 500+” programme – can be filed online as of 1 July via the website: https://empatia.mpips.gov.pl/ or via e-banking and as of 1 August also in a traditional manner (in paper form). The application should be filed until 30 November.

The application can be filed in the same institutions as the 500+ application, that is, at the town hall or municipal office, social welfare centre or other appointed unit in the municipality (e.g. in benefits centre). Whereas, applications for the benefit for children remaining in foster care are accepted by poviat family support centres.

Filing the application in July or August guarantees payment of the benefit not later than until 30 September. If the application is filed in consecutive months (in September, October or November), the support shall reach the family within 2 months as of filing the application.

The good start benefit is not vested on children attending kindergarten and children undergoing annual kindergarten preparation in the so-called “reception class” in a kindergarten or school. The Good Start programme does not cover students.
