Persistent frost - let's be considerate of others
09.01.2026
While some people are enjoying the real winter and enjoying its delights, others are fighting for their lives. Because sub-zero temperatures pose a real threat especially to people in crisis of homelessness. Do you see anyone who might need support? React - you can save someone's life.
Sustained sub-zero temperatures for days are a huge challenge. People in crisis of homelessness are particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of hypothermia. But they are not the only ones - frail or elderly people also find it more difficult to cope with such conditions. And anyone can fall on a slippery surface.
Do not pass by indifferently!
If we see someone, for example, sleeping at a bus stop or simply looking like they need support, let's not pass by indifferently. Even, if we suspect that that person is under the influence of alcohol. If the person is conscious - offer to help and ask if they can cope. If we have any doubts or the person does not react - call the municipal police, the police or 112.
Do not assume that someone else has already made the call. One submission more is always better than one too few.
Helping people in homelessness crisis during cold weather
There are 221 shelters for the homeless, 78 shelters with care services, 97 night shelters and 87 heating facilities. These facilities offer a total of more than 13,000 places available in all provinces.
For people in crisis to be cared for, they first have to come forward for it, and they do not always have the knowledge, awareness or capacity to do so. Our one phone call can set the aid machine in motion.
What is worth bearing in mind?
Heating centres operate without additional paperwork and around the clock during freezing weather - they are places where people can get warm, have a warm drink, eat a meal and spend the night safely. Local authorities and services increase the number of patrols during periods of cold weather - but the cooperation of residents is key here.
Social assistance is not only about accommodation - it is also about meals, clothing, social assistance, health care and support to exit homelessness - details available from social assistance centres.
