“Solidarity with Seniors” - on the support for the elderly during the pandemic

A press briefing on the protection and support of the elderly during the COVID-19 pandemic took place at the Ministry of Family and Social Policy on Wednesday. - Senior citizens are the foundation of families, and just like the foundations of a solid home, they require special care - said Marlena Maląg, Minister of Family and Social Policy.

Support for Social Welfare Homes

During her speech, Minister Maląg reminded that despite the difficult situation related to the pandemic, key programmes for seniors, such as “Senior+” and Social Activity of Senior Citizens are still being implemented. In addition, specific funds were provided in support of the elderly. The Minister stated that over PLN 400 million was allocated for the purposes related to the functioning of social welfare homes. - Another PLN 40 million were transferred yesterday to Voivodes and these funds will be allocated to the authorities running the social welfare homes to ensure stability and safety for our seniors - she added. The funds provided were used to prepare and protect nursing homes from the increase in SARS-CoV-2 infections in the autumn.

Minister Maląg also addressed the employees of the Social Welfare Homes. - On behalf of the entire government, I wish to thank the employees of social welfare homes for their daily work in favour of others – she said.

Seniors, please remember about the principles

Minister Maląg also reminded seniors to observe basic safety principles when they go out for a walk or when they want to do shopping. - Primarily, our seniors must feel safe. Please remember the basic principles: distance, disinfection, masks - said the Minister, reminding at the same time that wearing face masks in public area in the entire country has been mandatory since last Saturday.

During her speech, the minister also reminded about the restoration of the hours for seniors at the stores between 10 and 12 am. - The hours for seniors will allow our seniors to safely do their shopping. If necessary, they can also shop at other times, but we offer this time to ensure their safety – she stressed.
