The future of social security. Minister Katarzyna Nowakowska at the OECD conference.

19.02.2025

Global megatrends, such as population aging and technological change, are driving the need for a broad discussion on the current state and future direction of social policy. On 14 February, the OECD Conference of Ministers of Social Policy was held in Paris, providing a platform for the exchange of ideas, experiences, and perspectives on the future of social security investments. The Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy was represented at the event by Under-Secretary of State Katarzyna Nowakowska.

The theme of the conference was the phrase "New Frontiers for Social Policy: Investing in the Future". The event brought together ministers and high-level officials from OECD member states, countries associated with or seeking membership, as well as representatives of international organizations such as the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Council of Europe, and the International Social Security Association (ISSA).

In the face of the unfavourable demographic changes of declining fertility rates and accelerating population ageing experienced by most OECD countries, but also in the face of the gradual evolution of existing cultural patterns and family models, well-considered, long-term and well-balanced social policies should play a key role, offering solutions to both mitigate and compensate for the negative consequences of demographic processes, the gradual adaptation of societies to the changes taking place, as well as to provide the best possible conditions conducive to the decision to have a child.

– Deputy Minister Katarzyna Nowakowska said in Paris.

The OECD High-Level Forum took place on 13 February, the day before the conference. It provided a platform for discussion between policy makers and representatives of different stakeholders, such as social partners, representatives of civil society or academia. The debates focused on topics that aligned with the themes of the Conference.
