The UN Human Rights Council adopts a resolution on the Convention on the Rights of Older Persons
08.04.2025
On 3 April 2025, the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution, which called for starting work on the UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons. Poland is among the co-sponsors of the resolution.
The document formally launches the process of preparations for the development of an international treaty to address gaps in the protection of the human rights of older persons, which was previously recommended by the UN General Assembly and the UN Open-ended Working Group on Ageing.
Poland’s crucial role
The resolution is an important milestone on the road towards achieving the systemic protection of the rights of older people globally. Poland was a co-sponsor of this key document.
We are actively working to empower older people at all levels, including within the UN.
Poland will continue to actively participate in the development of the language of the future Convention in partnership with other countries, social organisations, human rights institutions and older people themselves.
Next steps
What comes next? The resolution enables the establishment of an intergovernmental working group tasked with drafting the text of the Convention. The working group could be launched as early as in the beginning of next year.
This open group will involve member states, international organisations, national human rights institutions, organisations of older persons and other stakeholders. The process will be overseen by the UN Human Rights Council and the outcomes will be forwarded to the United Nations for further processing.
