World Urban Forum in Katowice - 11 months left to the start of the event

26.07.2021

The 11th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF11) will start on 26 June 2022. Intensive preparations for the world's largest event on urban issues are underway. In July, UN representatives visited our country and the Senate adopted a bill on the organisation of the 11th session of the World Urban Forum in Poland.

World Urban Forum in Katowice - 11 months left to the start of the event

Preparations for the World Urban Forum have entered a decisive phase. The 11 months that remain until the start of the event will be devoted to further intensive work. We want to prepare an event at the highest world level. Our goal is for the message about the organisation of WUF11 by our country to reach as many recipients as possible, whom we already invite to participate in the event in June 2022

- said government plenipotentiary for the preparation of the World Urban Forum in Katowice in 2022, Małgorzata Jarosińska-Jedynak.

UN-Habitat on a visit to Poland

UN-Habitat, the Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy and the City of Katowice are the organisers of next year's WUF11. On 13 July, UN representatives flew to Poland to discuss preparations for the event. The UN-Habitat mission consisted of staff coordinating preparations for the World Urban Forum, working in particular on the programme part of the event and responsible for involving as many people and institutions as possible in the process. The meetings also discussed promoting the WUF at other events, for example the upcoming Expo 2020 in Dubai, the COP26 conference in Glasgow and the Digital Summit (IGF) in Katowice. The visit also provided an opportunity to visit Warsaw and Katowice.

Law on the organisation of WUF11 in Poland

On 23 July, the Senate gave positive consideration to a bill previously adopted by the Sejm, facilitating the organisation of the World Urban Forum in Poland. The document will now be signed by the President. The act on the organisation of the WUF11 defines the tasks of public administration bodies, services and the City of Katowice, the implementation of which, due to its international character and challenges, is not sufficient under current laws. The tasks indicated in the act relate in particular to ensuring public safety and order. In view of security needs, the document also sets out specific rules for the performance of contracts relating to the organisation of the event. To finance the task, it is planned to use mainly state budget funds, while the provisions regulate in detail what these funds may be spent on.

11th Session of the World Urban Forum

From 26 to 30 June 2022, Katowice will become the world capital of cities. For 5 days, we will be discussing vividly issues related to the challenges of contemporary urbanisation. The event taking place under the motto: "We change our cities for a better future" will bring together not only experts and enthusiasts of urban issues, but above all committed city dwellers who are not indifferent to the fate of their "small homelands".
