Diplomatic relations between Poland and Bhutan were established in 2012.
Political cooperation
Historical view
The Republic of Poland established diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Bhutan on November 29, 2012. A joint statement on the establishment of diplomatic relations was signed by the Permanent Representatives of both countries to the United Nations in New York. The document came into force on the day of signing. In Bhutan, the Polish ambassador from New Delhi is accredited. Bhutan does not have a diplomatic mission in Poland.
Political cooperation after 1989
In May 2011 Poland was visited by the wife of King of Bhutan Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, who met with Anna Komorowska and inaugurated the activities of the Polish-Bhutanese Friendship Society. On October 8-10, 2015, the first visit of the Polish delegation took place - it which was chaired by Director of the Asia-Pacific Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Michał Kołodziejski. The delegation included 10 companies - laureates of the "Greenevo" program, representatives of the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The delegation was received by foreign minister Lyonpo Damcho Dorji and five deputy ministers of ministries: economy, agriculture, planning, information and communication, and infrastructure. The purpose of the visit was to initiate bilateral political and economic contacts. An important element of the visit were discussions on cooperation on the UN forum and the possibility of Poland's development assistance. Plans for cooperation in the field of agriculture and urban transport were also discussed. In November 2022, on the 10th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations, Poland opened an Honorary Consulate in Thimphu, Bhutan.
Economic cooperation
Bilateral trade in 2024 amounted to EUR 63.000, including exports from Poland of EUR 60.000 and imports from Bhutan of EUR 3.000.
Since 2023, the Polish Ministry of Finance has been implementing an aid program for the Kingdom of Bhutan. As part of the project available under “Tax Inspectors Without Borders”, Polish experts support the tax administration of Bhutan in legal control of international companies providing knowledge, training and consultations.
There are no bilateral economic agreements between Poland and Bhutan.
