06.11.2025

The Republic of Poland was honored to serve as the Focus Country at this year's Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF).

Panel discussion - Polish Cinema Then and Now

The festival programme featured a broad selection of contemporary Polish films, a retrospective dedicated to the acclaimed director Wojciech Jerzy Has, as well as screenings of Polish classics, animation, and documentary cinema—highlighting the richness and diversity of Poland’s film tradition.

Among the opening films was Chopin, A Sonata in Paris, a biographical film about the life and music of the legendary composer Frédéric Chopin, directed by Michał Kwieciński. The screening was preceded by a short piano recital by Polish pianist Monika Rosca, which set the mood for the film. Chopin, Chopin was warmly received by the audience and provided a fitting start to Poland’s presence at the festival.

The official inauguration of Poland as the Focus Country was attended by Dr. Piotr Antoni Świtalski, Head of Mission of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in New Delhi; Mr. Gautam Ghose, renowned filmmaker; Mr. Parambrata Chatterjee, actor and director; and Mr. Michał Kwieciński, director of Chopin, A Sonata in Paris.

The festival also featured the exhibition “Polish Cinematography in Posters: The Art of Andrzej Pągowski” at Gaganendra Pradarshashala, presenting 20 artistic posters created for the Polish films included in the festival programme.

Poland’s participation as Focus Country at KIFF 2025 offered a unique platform to present Polish cinema to Indian audiences and further strengthened cultural ties between Poland and India.
