Jakub Rutnicki, Minister for Sport and Tourism, met with the medallists and participants of the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships held in Toruń. During the meeting, the minister thanked the athletes for their commitment, determination and for their success in representing Poland on the international arena.
For the Polish national team, the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships were one of the most successful events in history. The White-and-Reds won a total of four medals:
- Jakub Szymański – gold medal in the 60 m hurdles,
- Natalia Bukowiecka – silver medal in the 400 m run,
- Kajetan Duszyński, Anna Gryc, Marcin Karolewski and Justyna Święty-Ersetic) – bronze medal in the 4×400 m relay mixed,

I am truly pleased to welcome you here. I would like you to know that the aim of our daily work is to experience moments like this one today, to be able to host World Championship medallists, as now in Toruń. This is a special day. The results you have achieved inspire great optimism for the future of athletics. It has been an excellent event and we are very proud of you,
– said Jakub Rutnicki.
The Polish team also finished second in the points classification. Thus, for the second time in history, they were among the top three teams in the points classification in the World Indoor Championships.
During the meeting, attention was also drawn to the need to further develop sports infrastructure for athletics. This is of key importance for maintaining a high standard of training and for holding top-level athletics events in Poland.
Sports facilities are very important, as is training. Yet, it is key that every athlete is aware of our support. You are an inspiration to us all,
- added the minister.
The minister also emphasised the event’s significance for promoting our country. For three days, Poland was the world capital of the queen of sports, which greatly promoted Toruń and the whole country.
The World Athletics Indoor Championships were hosted by Poland for the second time. In 2014, the event was held at Ergo Arena where the Polish team won three medals.
The meeting at the Ministry of Sport and Tourism was not only an opportunity to reflect on the event but also to meet and talk in person, to extend congratulations and thank the athletes and coaches for their professionalism, persistence and fighting spirit throughout the competitions.
