Chorzów to host an exciting athletics event. Silesia 2028 is getting closer
28.04.2026
A press conference on hosting the 2028 European Athletics Championships was held today at Superauto.pl Silesian Stadium. The event was attended by Piotr Borys, Deputy Minister of Sport and Tourism, Wojciech Saługa, Marshal of Silesian Voivodeship, and Sebastian Chmara, President of the Polish Athletics Federation. The meeting confirmed Poland's readiness to host one of Europe's main sports events.
A historic time for Poland
The European Athletics Championships will be held in Poland for the first time in history. As Deputy Minister Piotr Borys emphasised, it will be the largest sports event in the country since UEFA Euro 2012.
The European Athletics Championships at this beautiful Silesian Stadium are becoming a reality. Silesia 2028 means cooperation between the Polish government, the Silesian Voivodeship and the Polish Athletics Federation. It will be a very large event,
- said Deputy Minister Piotr Borys.
The conference was also an opportunity to highlight the event’s significance for promoting Poland globally and building organisational capacity in the context of future major sports events.
The Silesian Voivodeship, with 4.6 million residents, has for years been building its reputation as a region of sport and modern infrastructure, which was one of the key factors in the host selection process.
The Silesian Stadium is one of the most modern athletics venues in Europe. It has hosted such prestigious events as Kamila Skolimowska Memorial, part of the Diamond League series.
A boost for sport and the young generation
The Silesia 2028 European Championships will not only be a sports event but also a driver for the development of athletics in Poland. Particular emphasis has been placed on inspiring young athletes and promoting physical activity.
The event will be a key element in the long-term development of athletics in Poland, to which significant funding is allocated, including nearly 85 million PLN from the Ministry of Sport and Tourism for the national team’s training and preparation in 2025–2026.
Poland to show its potential
The European Athletics Championships is an event with a tradition of over 90 years, bringing together the continent’s top athletes and hundreds of thousands of fans. In 2028, the eyes of Europe will be on Chorzów and the Silesian Park – one of the largest green urban areas in Europe, which will be a part of the event’s setting.
Holding the championships is another step in strengthening Poland’s position as a host of major sports events, and an opportunity for international promotion of the country, the region and Polish tourism.
Our country is also bidding to host the Summer Olympic Games 2040. We thus have a lot of work ahead of us, and many expectations. The road to the Games through such major events as the European Athletics Championships demonstrates our organisational capacities and Poland’s strong points. We are the world’s 20th largest economy and were a very popular tourist destination last year,
- added Piotr Borys.
