07.11.2025
On 4 November 2025 Jakub Rutnicki, Minister of Sport and Tourism, was appointed by the Council of the European Union as a member of the Foundation Board of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). As a minister from the current presidency trio (Poland-Denmark-Cyprus), he will represent the European Union in the WADA structure. The Board, in which Poland has gained a representative, is WADA's highest decision-making body.
WADA’s primary role is to develop, harmonise and coordinate anti-doping rules and policies across all sports. The goal is pursued by WADA through drawing up, at various levels, documents setting out the objectives of the World Anti-Doping Programme and the means of achieving them. The mechanism comprises primarily:
- the World Anti-Doping Code (level 1 document),
- international standards (level 2 documents),
- best practice models (level 3 documents).
Furthermore, WADA’s key activities include scientific and social science research, education, intelligence and investigations, development of national anti-doping capacities, and monitoring of compliance with the World Anti-Doping Programme.
WADA’s 42-member Foundation Board is composed of representatives of the sports movement (Olympic Movement) and representatives of national governments (Public Authorities). The Board meetings are held once a year to determine WADA’s strategic directions in global anti-doping policy and priorities for the coming months. In addition, WADA Foundation Board oversees the implementation of the World Anti-Doping Code, supervises the activities of the Executive Committee, adopts amendments to existing rules, approves the budget and coordinates cooperation between governments, sports federations and national anti-doping agencies (NADOs). The current President of WADA Foundation Board and of the entire organisation is Mr Witold Bańka.
