A new stage in medicine - Europe's first inter-hospital operation at the MIA's State Medical Institute
01.08.2025
On 1 August this year, doctors working at the State Medical Institute (SMI) of the Ministry of Interior and Administration - cardiac surgeon Prof. Piotr Suwalski and urologist Dr Paweł Wisz - carried out remote robotic operations. The specialists performed robotic surgeries on patients at the Institute in Warsaw, while operating a console at the MIA hospital in Gdańsk. This was Europe's first remote surgical operation carried out in different hospitals.
The patients were safe at all times and everything was done in accordance with current procedures and regulations. The robot is approved for medical use in the European Union – it is CE certified.
Approval for the operation was obtained from the Bioethics Committee and, according to the guidelines, consent was obtained from the patients and other entities. The link was established under the supervision of the MIA's cyber security specialists on both sides. The data transfer was internal and secured within the hospitals.
The delay was 30 times shorter than the precisely defined standards in telesurgery and close to the parameters for on-site surgery. In addition, full security was provided, from a back-up robotic console at the operation site to full surgical and anaesthetic support on site.
Similar operations in different areas are planned at other hospitals and institutes.
Success of the ministry’s health service
This success is of considerable importance, above all for patients. Importantly, it increases access to highly specialised robotic surgeries, performed by experienced specialists. Patients from other countries that lack access to experienced doctors can also benefit.
In special cases, the technology used today allows operations to be carried out without putting highly qualified doctors at risk.
Remote operations allow young doctors to learn the difficult art of robotic surgery, under the guidance of specialists from different centres who can take over the operation at any time.
