03.02.2022

On Thursday (3 February), Deputy Minister Bartosz Grodecki took part in the informal meeting of the European Union Council for Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) in Lille, the first during the French Presidency. The Ministers of the Interior met representatives of the European Commission, Frontex, Europol and the Asylum Agency.

During the discussion, the Ministers addressed the most topical issues concerning the security of EU citizens. These included crisis management in Europe, radicalisation and, particularly, the lessons learned from recent events in Afghanistan and Belarus regarding border and migration management.

The Ministers also discussed the challenges the Schengen area has faced in recent years (migration crises, terrorist attacks, pandemics). They also addressed opportunities for improving the situation by strengthening free movement and control over the migratory phenomena.

Furthermore, given the climate change and new threats facing Europe, the Ministers debated the best possible application of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

Moreover, Deputy Minister Bartosz Grodecki attended a coordination meeting of the Visegrad Group (V4), currently chaired by Hungary.

The next formal meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council of the European Union will take place in Brussels on 3-4 March 2022.
