Head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration: 'We decided to maintain temporary border controls for another 2 months.'

03.08.2025

Temporary controls on the borders with Germany and Lithuania are extended until 4 October this year. On Friday, the relevant regulation was issued and sent for notification to the European Commission, Minister of Interior and Administration Marcin Kierwiński informed. 'We can see that these controls are bearing fruit. These measures are effective, and they are carried out with the full understanding of our European partners', stressed the head of the MIA.

Head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration: ‘We decided to maintain temporary border controls for another 2 months.’

A briefing by Minister Marcin Kierwiński with the provincial governors and heads of services on the current situation at the borders was held at the MIA on Sunday, 3 August at 9:00 a.m. The meeting was also attended by Minister of Infrastructure Dariusz Klimczak and Deputy Ministers of Interior and Administration Czesław Mroczek and Maciej Duszczyk, province governors from regions close to the national border, representatives of the Border Guard, Police, Military Police, Territorial Defence Forces, the Railway Protection Guard, PKP Intercity, the General Directorate of National Roads and Motorways and the General Inspectorate of Road Transport.

Passable borders, assured security

Yesterday I was at our eastern border. There we are trying to close the eastern route of illegal migration. We have been very successful in this. The 98% tightness of our barrier causes Belarusian services, Russian services and illegal migration to move to other sections. Hence the decision to maintain temporary controls at the German and Lithuanian borders for two more months

stressed the head of the MIA.

According to the decision of the Minister of Interior and Administration, temporary border controls on persons will be extended for 60 days – from 6 August to 4 October 2025. A regulation to this effect was issued on Friday, 1 August this year, and sent to the European Commission for notification.

We have decided to keep these temporary controls in place for two more months. In September, we will make further decisions based on the data that the Border Guard, the Armed Forces and the Police will provide

said Minister Marcin Kierwiński.

We can see the point of these activities. The outstanding performance of our services show how effective these controls are. Borders remain passable and inspections are carried out in the least disruptive manner possible

he added.

The aim of the measures introduced is to counter illegal migration. The goal is to reduce the problems resulting from the shifting of the routes that to date have crossed the Polish-Belarusian border to other places – primarily to Lithuania and Latvia.

Effective coordination of services and international support

As of 7 July, temporary border controls on persons have been reinstated at sections of the German and Lithuanian borders. Within these controls:

  • 52 border crossing points were designated on the border with Germany and
  • 13 at the border with Lithuania.

The extent of the control is proportionate to the level of risk and is calibrated to the security situation. It involves verification of the identity of persons entering Poland, carried out in as unobtrusive a manner as possible.

Minister Marcin Kierwiński recalled that the decision to extend the control was preceded by extensive international consultations.

We have informed all our partners. We have sent letters to Latvia and Estonia, and I have personally spoken to the Minister of Interior of Lithuania. There is a full understanding of our decision, because it also works in the interest of the security of our neighbours

he noted.

The Military and the Police continue to support the Border Guard

Deputy Minister Czesław Mroczek thanked all the services involved, in particular the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces, which have been on duty along the border with Belarus for months.

We will use the support of the Armed Forces for temporary controls at the German and Lithuanian borders

informed the deputy head of the MIA.

This is the result of a decision taken by Prime Minister Donald Tusk and consultations with the Minister of National Defence. Soldiers will support the Border Guard as they have done in the past. The Police and services under the Minister of Infrastructure will also be involved

he added.

A shared responsibility of the entire European Union

Deputy Minister Maciej Duszczyk also spoke about the importance of cooperation with partners in the region.

We see mobilisation on the Lithuanian and Latvian sides. This enabled them to redeploy the appropriate forces and enabled us to implement the controls effectively. We are in constant contact with our partners and the European Commission, to whom we have submitted the relevant documents

he pointed out.

As he emphasised, the current migratory pressure is hybrid in nature and requires the involvement of the entire European Union.

This is not a standard migration crisis. This is a threat generated by countries hostile to the European Union. Therefore, we are also mobilising additional funds,  not only for the Polish-Belarusian border, but also for the Latvian-Belarusian and Lithuanian-Belarusian borders

said the deputy head of the MIA.

The temporary control at the borders with Germany and Lithuania will be extended until 4 October 2025. This decision effectively counteracts illegal migration and strengthens Poland's internal security. The checks are carried out in an efficient manner and with as little inconvenience to travellers as possible. Thanks to the close cooperation of the services and the support of the military, the borders remain passable. Poland's actions meet with the understanding and support of its European Union partners.
