Minister Marcin Kierwiński: zero illegal border crossings from Belarus

27.04.2026

Poland's eastern border has become an insurmountable barrier for illegal migrants. In the first three months of 2026, the Polish services thwarted all attempts to enter the country illegally from Belarus, achieving a 100 per cent success rate in preventing such crossings. This was announced by the Minister of Interior, Marcin Kierwiński, at a briefing for the services responsible for Poland's border security. The head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration added that in 2025, the Border Guard issued nearly 15,000 decisions ordering foreign nationals to return to their home countries - twice as many as in 2022.

Briefing by the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration, Marcin Kierwiński, with the services responsible for border protection

On Monday 27 April, a briefing was held at the Ministry of Interior and Administration’s headquarters, attended by the Minister of Interior and Administration, Marcin Kierwiński; the Deputy Minister, Czesław Mroczek; representatives of the Ministries of National Defence and Infrastructure; commanders of the Border Guard, the Police, as well as the armed forces and other services involved in border security and maintaining public order.

The number of people who crossed the border from Belarus illegally in the first quarter is zero. Our border is so secure and so well-guarded today because, since December 2023, we have moved from words to action. This is the result of our firm policy and the tremendous commitment of our officers and soldiers. We have kept our word. We promised the Polish people secure borders, and that is exactly what we have delivered,

- said Minister Marcin Kierwiński.

Since the start of the year, the number of attempts to breach the barrier has fallen from nearly 3,900 in 2025 to just 150 this year.

Our strategy has been simple and yielded tangible results. Not only are we preventing attempts to cross the border, but we have also alleviated the migratory pressure. After years in which we recorded 30,000 incidents a year, today we are talking about zero successful attempts. This shows that consistent action has made the Polish border an insurmountable barrier,

- said Czesław Mroczek, Deputy Minister of Interior and Administration.

An end to illegal border crossings

Poland has also become the EU leader in return policy. The success rate for deporting people without the right to reside has increased by 150 per cent compared with 2022 and stands at 65 per cent.

We have a zero-tolerance policy towards breaches of the law. If anyone takes advantage of Polish hospitality and breaks the rules, they must leave. In 2025, we issued nearly 15,000 compulsory return orders – that is twice as many as just a few years ago. This is genuine protection for the safety of Poles,

- emphasised Marcin Kierwiński, Minister of Interior and Administration.

Polish engineering ingenuity protects the sky and land

The Ministry of Interior and Administration has opted for modern solutions manufactured by domestic companies. Since March 2026, the border has been protected by an advanced anti-drone system worth 60 million zlotys, which detects flying objects from a distance of hundreds of kilometres. At the same time, the EES system is operational at all 71 border crossings; to date, it has recorded 5.6 million transactions and collected biometric data from over 2 million travellers.

We have invested nearly 3 billion zlotys to turn what was previously a fence into an impenetrable barrier. Thanks to state-of-the-art electronics and Polish technology, we can spot any threat before it reaches our border,

- emphasised Marcin Kierwiński, Minister of Interior and Administration.

The minister also emphasised the importance of cooperation with the Military Police, the Railway Security Service and the Road Transport Inspectorate.
