The temporary restriction of the right to asylum at the border with Belarus will be in place for another 60 days. The resolution stems from the so-called Asylum Act, which the government adopted in December 2024. It counters the taking advantage of migration by Belarus, which, in cooperation with Russia and international criminal groups, organizes the smuggling of migrants into the European Union.

Organized migration pressure continues at the border with Belarus, posing a serious threat to the security of the state and Polish citizens. At the same time, the operation of the temporary restriction of the right to asylum is having the desired effect. Most importantly, it has a preventive effect, making it more difficult to use the international protection procedure to cross the border and legalize residence in Poland for further travel to EU countries.

Key solutions

  • Once the Sejm has given its consent, the government will extend by 60 days the temporary restriction of the right to apply for international protection at the border with Belarus.
  • The extension will take effect on 26 May 2025, immediately following the end of the period for which the restriction is currently in place.
