Statement of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration concerning expanding the sanctions to include the representatives of the regime of Alexander Lukashenko

30.05.2023

In view of the fact that the Supreme Court of the Republic of Belarus has upheld the draconian sentence against Andrzej Poczobut and the continuing repressions against political opponents of the regime of Alexander Lukashenko perpetrated by the Belarusian authorities, the Minister of the Interior and Administration decided to include 365 Belarusian citizens in the register of foreigners whose residence on the territory of Poland is undesirable. These individuals will also be banned from entering the Schengen area, and their assets and resources have been effectively frozen. In addition, the Minister decided to freeze funds and assets of 20 entities and 16 individuals connected with Russian finance.

Communication from the Ministry of the Interior and Administration

365 Belarusian citizens were added to the sanctions list, including 159 members of the Belarusian parliament. Other members of parliament were earlier placed on the Polish sanctions list – as a result, the sanctions list includes all members of the Belarusian parliament. The restrictions also concern judges (76 individuals), prosecutors (7 individuals), representatives of local administrations (32 individuals), as well as law enforcement officers and staff (28 individuals).

The expanded register also includes representatives of Belarusian regime media involved in spreading propaganda (23 individuals), athletes and officials associated with sports (24 individuals), employees of Belarusian state bureaus, institutions and state-owned companies (8 individuals), as well as people active in the field of culture and the academic community (8 individuals).

In addition, the register now includes entrepreneurs with ties to Russian finance, namely 15 citizens of the Russian Federation and 1 Belarusian citizen. The sanctions also cover 20 business entities – 19 linked to the Russian Federation and 1 linked to Belarus.

These individuals promoted the Belarusian regime and were involved in legitimising and supporting the repressive policies of the authorities in Minsk. They are also responsible for the politically motivated judgement against Andrzej Poczobut on false charges.

The listed individuals were also involved in collecting materials and conducting investigations into the participation of Belarusians in pro-democracy protests. The individuals included in the sanctions list are guilty of using physical and mental torture, beatings, intimidation and discrimination against the Polish minority. The listed individuals were also involved in the destruction of Polish cemeteries and monuments in Belarus.

Among the individuals included in the expanded sanctions list were also people responsible for organising illegal migration to Poland and the Baltic States.
