The Head of the Ministry of the Interior: I welcome the EC's decision to donate EUR 700,000 to international NGOs and humanitarian organisations to help migrants in Belarus

18.11.2021

- 'I welcome the European Commission's decision to transfer EUR 700,000 to international non-governmental and humanitarian organisations to help migrants in Belarus. I consider it a response to the letter of 12 November from the Ministers of the Interior of Poland, Austria, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to international NGOs,' said Minister Mariusz Kamiński. On Wednesday (17th November), the European Commission said it would allocate EUR 200,000 in humanitarian aid for migrants in Belarus. The EU has also secured an additional EUR 500,000 for this purpose.

We expect swift and concrete action. We want these funds to reach humanitarian aid organisations as soon as possible

- emphasised Minister Mariusz Kamiński.

The EC's decision is, among other things, a result of the letter which Minister Kamiński and the Ministers of the Interior of Austria, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia sent to international non-governmental organisations last Wednesday (12 November). The Heads of the Ministers of the Interior called for organising humanitarian aid for migrants who are in Belarus.

The funds allocated by the European Commission will reach the migrants through the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and other humanitarian organisations. They will be used to purchase, among others, food, blankets and other necessities.

When informing about the decision to grant aid to migrants in Belarus, the European Commission emphasised that it is ready to provide further funds if humanitarian organisations are given access to migrants.

Poland stands ready to provide logistical assistance to international NGOs in implementing this project.
