Madam President,

We thank Colombia for organizing this timely debate on advancing political solutions in the Middle East. We also thank the Secretary General for his comprehensive briefing.

Madam President,

Poland has consistently supported UN-led international efforts aimed at settling the situation in the region and delivering aid. We strongly believe that lasting security can only be built on the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations — respect for international law, responsible leadership, restraint, and sustained dialogue.

Madam President,

I would like to focus on four points today.

First, on the situation in the Gulf. As a strong supporter of the peaceful settlement of disputes, we still hope that negotiations between the United States and Iran will bring a satisfactory solution. The priorities are clear: calming down the situation and reaching an agreement that could help stabilise the broader Middle East and ensure freedom of navigation. We unequivocally condemn all acts of aggression and express our solidarity with all victims of the conflict in the Gulf region. At the same time, the current tensions risk repercussions well beyond the region — rising transportation costs, disrupted trade routes, and growing food insecurity, particularly in developing countries. Against this backdrop, humanitarian crises may deepen, migration pressures intensify, and radicalization gain further ground.

Second, on Lebanon. Poland welcomes the joint statement issued by Lebanon, Israel, and the United States on June 3rd. It is vital that all parties respect the ceasefire and seize this opportunity to work towards lasting peace. We welcome the EU’s continued support for the Lebanese government in empowering its institutions and restoring the state’s monopoly on the use of force. Poland remains a supporter of UNIFIL and hopes for a continued UN presence in Lebanon beyond the current mission.

Third, on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We reaffirm our strong support for the two-state solution. We hope the 15-point Roadmap recently presented by Mr. Mladenov will give new impetus to the Board of Peace and move Gaza out of the recurring cycle of war and humanitarian collapse toward recovery and reconstruction. We also call for an end to illegal settler activity — in the pursuit of sustainable peace, respect for the rule of law is essential.

Fourth, and finally, on the protection of civilians and humanitarian law. As conflicts continue to devastate civilian populations across the region, the human cost is staggering. Poland knows this dimension personally, having lost one of its citizens among World Central Kitchen volunteers in Gaza in April 2024. That loss is a reminder that those who dedicate their lives to alleviating suffering must never become targets. Urgent action must be taken to ensure respect for International Humanitarian Law, full accountability for its violations, and robust protection for humanitarian workers on the ground. Unfortunately, we see the same disregard for civilian life across the globe: in Africa, and in Ukraine. Atrocities against civilians have become a weapon of war. This Council and the broader international community must respond with clarity, demanding from all UN Member States full observance of IHL, unhindered humanitarian access, and an immediate end to the targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure.

I thank you.
