I would like to thank Greece for convening this timely debate on the situation in the Middle East. Turning first to the Gulf, the ongoing conflict in the region represents one of the most serious challenges to global stability, adding to Russia’s aggressive policies. We attach particular importance to safeguarding freedom of navigation and the uninterrupted flow of international trade. The implementation of the Mecca Pact provisions, particularly the efforts to counter Houthi threats, may be a step towards a new regional security architecture. In that context we strongly condemn Houthi attacks against civilian targets in Saudi Arabia.
Recognition of every state’s and nation’s right to security and peace remains key element of Poland’s Middle East policy. We remember the victims of the 7th October attacks, among which were polish citizens. We also recognize the Palestinian aspiration for statehood and support the two-state solution. As a provider of development and humanitarian aid to Gaza, we perceive the humanitarian situation there as catastrophic. The scale of civilian harm, destruction of civilian infrastructure and limited access to humanitarian assistance have broader implications for the international legal order. We are alarmed over the increasing tensions arising from the settler violence in the West Bank. We call Israel to safeguard respect for international humanitarian law and human rights law.
Poland is concerned with destruction of infrastructure in South Lebanon. It is crucial to support the Lebanese Armed Forces in enhancing their operational capabilities and maintaining their control over weapons in Lebanon. We back EU efforts in Lebanon, with a special focus on the establishment of the Support Mission designed to enhance Lebanese security and defence capabilities.
On the situation in Syria, we underline the need to respect Syria’s territorial integrity. We welcome the rehabilitation of the Iraq–Syria oil pipeline as an important step towards enhancing the resilience of energy markets in the wake of the disruption to oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Poland is ready to support the efforts towards recovery, and for this reason we took a decision to restore our diplomatic presence in Syria. We commend the cooperation of the Syrian authorities with the OPCW to fully dismantle the chemical weapons program developed by the Assad regime, as well as to investigate past uses. As in past years, Poland, in cooperation with several partners, including Syria, will table a draft resolution on the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
Let me take this chance and underline that Palestine and Lebanon are among top priorities of “Polish Aid”. Our assistance, both through multilateral and bilateral channels, has exceeded 10 million dollars in 2026. We remain committed to continue our support to both these countries in the upcoming year.
