ABW detains man suspected of initiating espionage activities

The officers of Poland’s counterintelligence service – the Internal Security Agency (ABW) – detained a Polish citizen suspected of initiating espionage activities for Russia and acting to the detriment of the interests of the Republic of Poland.

The ABW officers detained a Polish citizen suspected of espionage activities. The evidence, including taken procedural steps, indicates that the detained 66-year-old Pole is suspected of initiating espionage activities for Russia and cooperating with another man previously detained by the Agency. The 66-year-old supported the espionage activity of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) and acted to the detriment of the interests of the Republic of Poland.

The arrest took place on November 21st , 2021, in the Warmińsko-Mazurskie voivodship. During the search of the detainee's place of residence, items and documents were secured that complement the extensive evidence. The man did not plead guilty to the charges raised against him. Upon the court’s decision, he has been remanded in custody for the period of three months.

The investigation carried out by the ABW under the supervision of the National Public Prosecutor's Office is into the participation by certain citizens of the Republic of Poland and the Russian Federation in the activities of the Russian intelligence – FSB – against the Republic of Poland, i.e. crime under Art. 130 § 1 of the Criminal Code.

The case is developmental. Much of the evidence in it is classified.
