Common Agricultural Policy for food security
05.03.2025
The European Union faces a range of challenges, including geopolitical tensions, climate change, energy transition, and global competition. In response, the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU highlights the importance of multidimensional security, including food security.
Food security in the EU
Ensuring stable food supplies in Europe requires sustainable agriculture, support for local producers, and investment in modern technologies. It is also essential to reduce food waste and strengthen supply chain resilience against crises. The EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) should aim to secure food independence for the continent while also protecting the environment and animal welfare.
"The main issue today is the low profitability – or even lack of profitability – of agricultural production. One of the key challenges is ensuring the economic viability of farms", said Czesław Siekierski, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Food security is a key element of the "Vision for Agriculture and Food", outlined in the European Commission's political guidelines, presented by President Ursula von der Leyen.
The future of EU agricultural policy
The conference, organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, coincides with the start of the new EU Commissioner for Agriculture's mandate. On 19 February 2025, the Commissioner released the communication "Vision for Agriculture and Food: Shaping an Attractive Agricultural and Agri-Food Sector for Future Generations".
"We need to reflect together on what we want. What direction should the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) take to evolve", said Czesław Siekierski, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.
This vision outlines the development path for the European agri-food sector until 2040, considering current challenges and conditions. The document serves as a starting point for further discussions on the future of EU agricultural policy and the food system. At this stage, it does not present specific policy instruments but opens a debate on the sector's future direction.
The "Common Agricultural Policy for Food Security" conference marks an important starting point for discussions on the challenges of modern agriculture. The CAP plays a key role in shaping the future of food production, distribution, and consumption, while also tackling unfair trading practices. Strong and resilient food supply chains should support sustainable production and consumption while protecting farmers.
