On the situation in the Baltic Sea and the future of the Common Fisheries Policy - visit of Commissioner Costas Kadis
05.09.2025
- For us, this is a very important event from the point of view of the entire fishery sector. It shows that we cooperate with the European Commission in this respect. I am very glad that during yesterday's meeting with the fishermen, processors and representatives of aquaculture industry, we exchanged views on the future of the industry - said Secretary of State Jacek Czerniak in relation to the visit of Commissioner Costas Kadis to Poland.
Let us remind that on Thursday, Deputy Minister Jacek Czerniak and EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Costas Kadis met with the representatives of recognised fishery organisations. The second day of the visit was filled with further meetings in the ports of Gdynia and Gdańsk and a press conference summarising the Commissioner’s mission in Poland.
Commissioner Costas Kadis, addressing Deputy Minister Jacek Czerniak, thanked for organising a very interesting programme of the visit, and in particular a meeting with the representatives of the sector. He stressed that this was an opportunity to discuss the challenges faced by the industry.
– During my visits to the Member States, I always meet with ministers but I also try to meet with all stakeholders in the field of fisheries and aquaculture – said Costas Kadis.
During the press conference, the Commissioner informed that he had presented the existing and introduced EU policies as well as the logic behind those policy solutions developed by the European Commission to the participants in the meeting at the Maritime Fisheries Institute.
Deputy Minister Czerniak, during the meeting with the media, also referred to the topics discussed during Thursday’s talks with recognised fishery organisations. He pointed to two very important issues, namely, fishing opportunities in the Baltic Sea in 2026 and a discussion of the preliminary objectives of the Multiannual Financial Framework concerning fishery.
Moreover, Commissioner Kadis indicated the situation in the Baltic Sea, which he described as worrying. He pointed out that this was impacted by very different factors, which negatively affected the whole Baltic ecosystem. These are, among others: pollution, eutrophication, overfishing, munitions lying on the bottom of the Baltic Sea, as well as climate change. All these aspects have a negative impact on the ecosystem of the waterbody.
The Commissioner referred to the evaluation of the Common Fisheries Policy, which provides a framework for action for the fisheries and aquaculture sector in Europe.
As part of the second day of his visit to Poland, Commissioner Costas Kadis, together with an accompanying delegation, had an opportunity to board a fishing vessel and to take a cruise around the port in Gdańsk. The points of the programme also included a visit to the cold store and transshipment base “Deep Sea Fishing Port Gdańsk”.
