Talks with Ministers of Agriculture during the informal meeting in Copenhagen
08.09.2025
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Stefan Krajewski - as announced - is participating in the informal meeting of EU agriculture ministers, organised under the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU. The visit provides an opportunity to hold discussions on the current situation of European agriculture, also in the context of the provisions of the EU-Mercosur agreement. 'Many talks are already behind us, but we are not giving up. We wish to continue our dialogue with the ministers of Member States who share positions similar to that of the Polish Government,' emphasised the Minister of Agriculture.
Bilateral talks with the Ministers of Ireland and Italy
In addition to taking part in the official programme of the informal AGRIFISH Council, Minister Stefan Krajewski is holding meetings with the agriculture ministers of Ireland and Italy.
During today’s meeting with the Irish Minister of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and the Marine, Martin Heydon, Minister Krajewski raised the issue of Poland’s objection to the EU agreement with the Mercosur countries.
The head of the Polish Ministry of Agriculture stressed that the entry into force of the agreement in its current form could result in a significant increase in imports from Mercosur countries into the EU, particularly in sensitive sectors (beef, poultry, tobacco), which could in turn cause market disruptions. He further underlined that the requirements for sustainable agricultural production in the EU (including climate and environmental protection, labour standards, and animal welfare) are higher than those in the Mercosur countries, creating unequal competitive conditions.
Stefan Krajewski also expressed concerns regarding the safeguard clause for sensitive agricultural products. While the European Commission’s proposals partly respond to the expectations of farming communities, in the view of the Polish Minister, numerous clarifications are still required from the European Commission regarding the further procedure in this matter.
During both meetings, the Minister informed his counterparts that Poland supports the concept, currently under discussion at EU level, of establishing a fund and granting farmers compensation for losses arising from the entry into force of the agreement with Mercosur, in the event of excessive imports from that region. At the same time, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has put forward the proposal that the fund should also cover indirect losses sustained by agricultural producers, linked to the displacement of products from one Member State on the markets of other EU Member States by food imported from the Mercosur countries.
A similar meeting on the EU-Mercosur agreement is scheduled for tomorrow with the Italian Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, Francesco Lollobrigida.
Thematic scope of the informal meeting of EU Ministers of Agriculture in Copenhagen
As the second country in the Presidency Trio, Denmark is hosting an informal meeting of EU agriculture ministers in Copenhagen from 7 to 9 September 2025, chaired by the Danish Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Jacob Jensen.
The programme of the informal meeting spans three days. The first two days are devoted to study visits. On the third day, an informal session of the EU agriculture ministers will take place.
The main theme of the meeting in Copenhagen is enhancing competitiveness and accelerating the ecological transition of the EU agri-food sector, with particular emphasis on simplification and new technologies such as bio-solutions. These issues are being addressed both during today’s study visit and in the discussion paper prepared for tomorrow’s ministerial session.
